Shenglong Zhang, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at the College of Arts and Sciences, is breaking new ground in understanding how RNA shapes health, with a focus on sequencing RNA modifications that give rise to disease.
The study, led by Thomas Wallach, M.D., Chief of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Assistant Professor, found that fecal mtDNA offers substantial potential as a reliable and sensitive biomarker for assessing Inflammatory Bowel Disease activity.
Drs. Karina Ckless and Rajesh Sunasee, professors and co-chairs of chemistry and biochemistry, were awarded $468,731 to study what they said were “tiny materials made from plants called cellulose nanocrystals.”
